Blues F Steen injures hand, out for camp

ST. LOUIS (AP) St. Louis Blues forward Alexander Steen will miss the rest of training camp after suffering a left hand injury in the team's first preseason game.

The 33-year-old Steen was hurt against Dallas on Tuesday night and will be re-evaluated in three weeks. He is entering his 10th season with the Blues and coming off a year in which he had 16 goals and 35 assists in 76 regular-season games.

The Blues are already without forward Zach Sanford, who will miss 5-6 months after dislocating his left shoulder during training camp. Defenseman Jay Bouwmeester also has a left ankle fracture and will be re-evaluated in three weeks.

Devils' Boyle has cancer, hopes to play

Brian Boyle hopes to play hockey again soon after being diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia, a type of bone-marrow cancer that the New Jersey Devils' team doctor said can largely be treated with medication.

The 32-year-old forward was diagnosed with CML after bloodwork at the start of training camp showed irregularities from last season. Boyle said based on what team doctor Michael Farber and others have told him, he expects to live his life under normal conditions.

NHL hopes to gain interest in China

SHANGHAI (AP) As the Vancouver Canucks held their first practice in Shanghai before their exhibition game with the Los Angeles Kings, a dense fog settled over the ice. The humidity in the arena was high and the players could barely see the puck.

Large dehumidifiers were rolled in and the mist eventually cleared, but the NHL has perhaps a bigger visibility problem in China - a country with little tradition of winter sports, hockey included. The league is hoping to turn that around with a major push in the country, beginning with its first two preseason games between the Canucks and Kings in Shanghai and Beijing this week.

Sanford injures shoulder, out 5-6 months

ST. LOUIS (AP) St. Louis Blues forward Zach Sanford will undergo surgery and miss 5-6 months of action after dislocating his left shoulder during training camp.

Blues general manager Doug Armstrong announced the injury on Tuesday. He also said defenseman Jay Bouwmeester has a left ankle fracture and will be re-evaluated in three weeks.

Preds tab Josi captain to replace Fisher

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) General manager David Poile and coach Peter Laviolette noticed how the Predators picked defenseman Roman Josi to drive a sword into the field before the NFL's Tennessee Titans' home opener with the NHL team serving an honorary role pregame.

Seeing what Josi's teammates decided made selecting the Predators' eighth captain in franchise history that much easier.

Brickley scores 2 as Panthers top Preds

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) Connor Brickley had two goals and an assist, helping the Florida Panthers beat the Nashville Predators 5-3 in a preseason split-squad game on Tuesday night.

Henrik Haapala, Michael Matheson and Denis Malgin also scored for Florida. Starting goaltender James Reimer stopped all 15 shots he faced, and reserve Harri Sateri allowed three goals on 19 shots.

Wild extend C Koivu for 2 years, $11M

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) The Minnesota Wild and captain Mikko Koivu have agreed to a two-year, $11 million contract extension.

The Wild announced the deal on Monday night. The 34-year-old Koivu was entering the final season of his contract. He is coming off of one of his best years with 18 goals and 40 assists in 80 games and was a finalist for the Selke Trophy, given annually to the best defensive forward.

Top pick Hischier scores in debut

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) Nico Hischier scored in his preseason debut, helping the New Jersey Devils beat the Washington Capitals 4-1 on Monday night.

Hischier, the first overall pick in this year's NHL draft, made it 4-1 with a steal and a slick backhander at 15:46 of the third period . Mirco Mueller, Stefan Noesen and Kyle Palmieri scored in the second period for New Jersey.

Golden Knights roll in preseason opener

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) By the time the Elvis Presley impersonator singing tunes between whistles had left the building, the NHL's newest franchise was already well on its way to victory in its first exhibition game.

Tyler Wong scored three times and added an assist to help the expansion Vegas Golden Knights rout the Vancouver Canucks 9-4 on Sunday. Wong scored the first exhibition goal in club history.

Rest of NHL trying to stop Penguins

Each time Seth Jones felt like the Columbus Blue Jackets were dominating, the Pittsburgh Penguins went down the ice and scored. The series was over fast.

T.J. Oshie knows the feeling because the Penguins did it to the Washington Capitals often during playoff series the past two years.
